The Tiefbauamt coordinates, plans, builds, documents, and maintains the roads with the associated infrastructures and is responsible for the public sewage systems. It is responsible for flood protection and for safe traffic routes. It also coordinates the uses of public space and is the leading authority in the permit procedure. It collects and disposes of waste and ensures cleanliness in the city of Basel. The Tiefbauamt makes an important contribution to a high quality of life in Basel and is part of the Bau- und Verkehrsdepartement.
