The Army Staff (EM A) supports the Chief of the Army in his activities of conducting the Department of Defense domain and ensures global military planning as well as the development of the Swiss Army as a whole. It develops the strategic bases, the development of the armed forces, and the planning of the army and armaments, in accordance with political directives, and assumes tasks in the context of international security. The management, steering, and coordination of all cross-sectional domains (personnel, finance, real estate) also fall within its competence.

The Swiss Army employs more than 9000 employees in four military professions and approximately 200 civil professions, across 110 sites throughout Switzerland. It also ensures succession by training apprentices in more than 30 trades.
